The Y Society’s fundraising efforts directly benefit the International YMCA, which is a branch of the YMCA of Greater New York. Below is a brief description of the different worldwide levels of the YMCA and how we fit into the YMCA structure. We encourage you to get involved in your local YMCA and the International YMCA. International YMCA

The International YMCA is a Branch of the YMCA of Greater New York. Since 1911, we have been working with young people to build global citizens who are caring, responsible and committed to service. We offer value-based programs locally, nationally, and internationally, bring people together in local YMCAs, summer camps, school, business, and in the homes of local families.

We collaborate with the US government and other organizations to support J1 exchanges.

Though it had been conducting informal exchanges since the 19th century, the International YMCA officially began to administer its first exchange visitor program in 1948 after receiving a grant from the Ford Foundation. In total, the international YMCA has been formally operating exchange Visitor Programs under authorization by the U.S. Department of State for over 44 years. As early as 1918, the YMCA was offering English classes for immigrants on Ellis Island .

In 2008, we served nearly 8,000 young people from New York City , across the USA , and from more than 84 countries around the world, consisting of:

  • 84 Global Teens
  • 8 Go Global Volunteers
  • 2,004 Camp Counselors
  • 428 Interns/Trainees
  • 5,190 Work & Travel members
  • 22 Study Tours members

Strong Kids Campaign

Contributions to the International YMCA’s annual Strong Kids Campaign ensure that no young person is turned away because of the inabilitiy to pay. Each year, the YMCA provides financial assistance to hundreds of youth in need. These requests are now rising to unprecedented levels. The International YMCA, through its annual fundraising, wants to be there to meet them. As a donor, you have the unique opportunity to support American and international youth while they act as cultural envoys.
